Growing Young Again

10:00 BUSINESS MEETING

10:30 PROGRAM

GUEST SPEAKER: DR. RICHARD RATLIFF

Charles Burney, visiting Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach in 1773, vividly described his unique improvisations: "His eyes were fixed, his upper lip fell, and drops of effervescence distilled from his countenance. He said, if he were to set to work frequently, in this manner, he would grow young again." What is it about the improvisatory aspects of C.P.E. Bach's music that colors so many of his contemporaries and how does this unpredictable approach infuse into other genres and relate to the music of his contemporaries and also to later generations?
